Evolutionary psychologists have a strong hypothesis that hypocrisy is so hateful to us because detecting, deterring & banishing freeloaders has been so important to our survival in evolutionary terms. I think it still is important on the level of personal relationships.

There is something fundamentally wrong morally with a person who habitually & deliberately presents one set of values while acting against them in secret. There could be exceptions for external duress, psychological crisis etc. But mostly, no.

And I don't think there are very many people who engage in knowing & deliberate hypocrisy, because we nearly all want to believe we are good and morally consistent people. We need to feel this way to live with ourselves.

Most often, I suspect, someone who appears to be behaving hypocritically is not aware of the inconsistency which stems from their biased intuitions or has recognised it but rationalised it away to appease their cognitive dissonance & continue indulging biased intuitions.

I suppose it depends on “what hypocrisy are we talking about?” - the vegan with the leather watch strap isn’t on the same level as Barnaby “Family Values” Joyce campaigning to keep the gays out of marriage to protect its sanctity while also having an affair.
-
Campaigning to keep gays out of marriage is wrong (imo) irrespective of whether or not hypocrisy is committed. The problem here is homophobia, not hypocrisy.
-
The hypocrisy made it an especially rich serve of adding insult to injury. But they lost, and we can get married.

Good for thee, but not for me! All the benefits, and no personal cost to bare! I'm sold: will preach veganism (more tasty meat left for me!). Also preach immunization, enjoy heard benefits while sparing my child the risk of side-effects. You can't go wrong with this!

Although the article does not engage in arguments against : polyana unrealistic morality, preference falsification, conflict/selected targeting/outrage. Hypocrisy probably self reinforcing like lying is.
-
Given the prevalence of hypocrisy and projection in our current political conflicts, I think hypocrisy should be reserved to friends not opponents.
