I’m not sure why you would choose the word “hostile” when “critical” would suffice? I think it’s true that Marx’s and Engels’ analyses did not sufficiently account for gender. You can critique something and build on it at the same time.

Oh I see the issue now. I wasn’t criticising something as petty as mere word choice. I just don’t think, or didn’t think, “hostile” is a fair description (but you could be right). I don’t think first personal descriptions of emotional states are open to the same kind of dispute.
