Likewise. You will perhaps be pleased to hear that the pensioner will not be prosecuted. Killing people is wrong, but so is breaking into people's houses, and I'm not going to second-guess a man who was defending his home and, perhaps, his very life.

No charges been raised against the pensioner. If anything he deserves a medal for defending his home and his life against a dangerous career criminal. The big risk is he may be the target of revenge attacks from associates of the criminal.

For perspective, there is an archaic concept in the United States - which originated in English common law - that "a man's home is his castle". Such is the power of this arcane concept, that in America that the right to defend yourself at home is still "the castle doctrine".

If that was my parent I would want them to defend themselves; in their home. They have not robbed someone else's home or injured, murdered..

I don`t get it, was he arrested as procedure. Or is he charged? I can understand if its just procedure, just to investigate and then set free. If someone comes into my house its me, him and my baseball bat. I can not wait to see what happens.

Sounds like Reasonable Force to me. I predict no charges. They need to concentrate on protecting him from reprisals.

I can't say for the UK but courts in canada are reluctant to convict folks defending their homes.

And because
@harryhutton is the most culturally aware Briton in the UK, it is fitting that has the most brilliant take on the topic of crimes against the elderly in the UK. http://chasemeladies.blogspot.com/2006/11/army-boxer-67-beats-thieves.html …Thanks.
