Should they? Judging by life expectancy and succumbing to heart disease, maybe men could prioritize work/life balance over compensation. But this all assumes that these preferences are socialized, not innate. We're mammals, so a maternal instinct is almost certainly there.

Regarding that point; I’d point to my twitter handle, and also smile sweetly and ask if confounders, like men being more aggressive in negotiating for higher pay resulting higher rates of pay in a profession, are controlled for (spoiler; the answer is usually “no”).
