I might also have to write a thing distinguishing forms of leftism - radicals, libertarians, identitarians and liberals which also break down into smaller groups and where they overlap &where they conflict utterly. Might have to recruit someone skilled in the art of Venn Diagramshttps://twitter.com/EricHamell/status/981142017353842688 …

You're unfamiliar with British organisations such as Anti-Fascist Action and Red Action then? Origin is in countering the National Front's street-fighting strategy of the 1980s.
-
Do you see American Antifa as operating on the same premises but just applying them to different culture and history?
-
As far as I can tell, American Antifa is an umbrella term covering people who physically oppose what they believe is fascism? No central org so probably not much consistency between actions beyond that.
-
And this is why they seem to espouse ideas which are directly antithetical ideologically and intellectually, blending anarchism & Marxism & identity politics?
-
Do they? Wasn't aware there was even an organisation to issue statements.
-
No, I see no statements. I just see what they are saying during protests.
-
Ah yes, then the inconsistency is probably that it's different people at different times / students who haven't thought it all through yet
-
I'm not sure about that. I've heard adult self-described US anarchists agree wholeheartedly with intersectionalism and identity politics. How they can combine the individualism and libertarianism of anarchism with the authoritarianism of identity politics I have no idea.

There's a lot there. Will be a book soon. Special emphasis on discussion between Gillis and Byas. I agree with Byas' criticisms of antifa, but best discussion to understand the divide.

Thank you, Cory!

Here's a suggestion (junk if too time-consuming) that may be a useful workaround: come up with a list of ideologies from various jurisdictions (up to you how many), write a single line of description, then name a tweep who exemplifies the ideological position.

Agreed. Signed, American lefty. Though, I have spoken to some “conservative” brits who would never be comfortable identifying as an American “conservative.” People not on ground here underestimate how hard the lines are drawn between the ideologies. It’s an eagle tragedy.pic.twitter.com/8HEwJCjGWf

Smash the system. It is as coherent as any anarchist movement is.

Antifa are anarchists/communists who believe that capitalism has subverted basically all of society, including legal institutions and government. Thus, peaceful change is not possible and true progress can only come through a grassroots revolution by the workers/common man.
-
So they justify occasional violence against their political enemies by hoping that it will be a catalyst for a more general public awakening. That the silent masses will be emboldened to throw off the chains of capitalism and take back the nation by force.
-
It's basically just extremist communism that excuses violence against those they deem evil as a necessary evil on the road to a better, classless society.
-
Of course, they also put together montages of police officers being beaten by protesters and call it "riot porn" so the ideological consistency seems to be only skin deep. More often the ideology seems to be a mere excuse for hatred, guiltless violence, and self-aggrandizement.
