Brit tweeps: Petition: Create a Freedom of Speech Act and Bring an End to "Hate Speech" lawshttps://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/203615 …
That's right, yes. That is what by freedom of speech and it is what it asked for here. This is not asking for the right to cause a stampede, is it?

-
The right to freedom of speech should be called the right to freedom of expression because that would be clearer about what it covers. It doesn't cover causing a stampede, breaking confidentiality laws, committing espionage, commissioning a crime etc.
-
Exactly, so this petition is wrong and should be amended. What it should say is “We petition the government to introduce legislation protecting Freedom of Expr... oh wait, Article 10 ECHR, that”.
-
I also agree that freedom of speech would be better called freedom of expression to avoid people saying 'But you can't shout fire in a theatre' and completely missing the point but it isn't called that so we have to keep explaining that is what it means.
-
We already have it. Article 10. This is a stunt.
-
So, we've had no arrests for burning poppies, saying British soldiers should die and go to hell, saying transitioning children is wrong and teaching a dog a Nazi salute? The police are not explicitly saying they will arrest people for tweets? This is what we are countering.
-
How would you phrase bringing in a new act which allows people to express these ideas?
-
So you want people to be able to say whatever they like in whatever way they like and to whomever they like? Irrespective of the damage it may cause to people or a person?
-
No, not to whomever they like. There is no right to harass people or make them listen to you. People have been arrested for general tweets, facebook posts and youtube videos.

It is asking for the ability to say what you like without government intervention. How can they be anything other than the right to shout “Fire” in a cinema if you want?pic.twitter.com/LhNDnRpTvT

The right of freedom of speech has long been established to mean the freedom to express ideas & this is what it describes here. You don't seriously think they actually secretly want the right to cause stampedes and kill people? That's crazy.
-
Of course not but I’m making 2 points. Firstly you are right that they are asking for the wrong thing. Secondly, we already have this, Article 10. This is just a stunt.
-
We do not already have this. It refers to a series of events recently where the government has interfered with speech and people have been arrested and that is because they happened. Also, the government responded to the petition that they'll continue to do this.
-
That’s because the petition is asking for something different to what you want. It wants complete freedom of speech (maybe they mean expression?). How come the whole of Europe accepts the qualified rights of Article 10 yet suddenly it’s not good enough for the UK (Scotland?)
-
No, it doesn't. It gives no indication of wanting the right to do anything other than stopping the government from punishing people for expressing ideas it doesn't like. I don't know how to answer the end bit. If all of Europe thinks its OK to punish speech, it's wrong.
