The only logical reason for this is to assert that marriage is about producing children and that same sex couples are less likely to do so due to this requiring extra steps and never happening by accident. But then it would have to apply to infertile & post-menopause couples

But I really don't think society sees marriage as being for the purpose of reproduction any more. It made sense one when it involved forcing couples to stay together and it actually was really hard to raise a child alone. Still far from ideal.

Yeah, I wasn't defending the connotation of "irrational" as opposed to "non-rational" ... just saying there are reasons that can readily be defended with societal logic. (And yes, society is set up to privilege in some ways.)

to support traditional marriage, it doesn't need to be the case that SSM is irrational it just needs to be the case that society reasonably perceives rationales for traditional marriage that it doesn't perceive for SSM

It isn't . And why should same sex couples be prevented from experiencing the same misery as hetrosexual couples?

The question should be why we still give tax breaks to married people. We should give them to families with kids. Father and mother get tax breaks and that would help everybody...
