Well...um, Auschwitz? We're never gonna settle this one. Morality is near impossible to quantify even when comparing two contemporary societies. But to call the 20th Century kind and gentle is surely a bit of a stretch

Stop 'umming' me, we can just have a conversation. No-one is saying we have got there yet. Just that there has been considerable progress, notwithstanding the first half of the 20th century. See Pinker.

It's my tweet and I can um if I want to. Read something about the Middle East, Rwanda, child porn, human trafficking...
-
It's just irritating. We can just have a conversation.
-
If I was having a spoken conversation and someone said my use of um was irritating, that would be a touch irregular to say the least
-
Yes, you can't help 'ums' in conversation. There's no reason for them to be in tweets. Just say what is confusing you and why. It's like 'Wow' instead of a counterargument.

I don't know I'm afraid. Little military history. However, I know that the rule of thumb for reporting on numbers at the time was to multiply it by an order of magnitude. So if it says '10, 000 men marched on X' records of payments to soldiers will shows 1,000.

There has never been a "good old days" except in one's mind. I think a rather influential band from your island wrote a ballad about it a few years back. It was mostly about a girl, but works out about the same.
