Famous atheists who write anti-religious content are revered specifically for having done so. The atheists who neither believe nor care, don’t “lead” on this topic. The only one I know of is @alaindebotton

It is, of course, possible to 'revere' public intellectuals & this happens. I think most people don't tho. They just admire their work and can even disagree with them.

The second point appears to be a non-sequitur. Of course atheists who don't care about religion don't get popular for criticising it. They don't care. This is the same with literally every topic. The people who get famous for making certain arguments care enough to make arguments

And that’s the obvious reason why they are then seen as leaders. Plus we all have overzealous friends who quote <name fave intellectual> too often to be believed.
