And the problem with 'misogyny in the atheist movement is a systemic problem' is that this claim is not coming from 'women.' It's coming from ppl of all genders who adhere to SocJus views. This undermines its credibility. Misogyny is hatred of women not rejection of SocJus values

I certainly agree with the idea of getting rid of leaders but this is an individual mentality thing. We never elected leaders & so can't sack them. One has to stop thinking in tribal terms of 'leaders' and instead have thinkers one respects but is not obliged to always agree with

I don't like the idea of 'leaders' generally. It implies a wholesale giving over of one's judgement and values to an individual. Unless you're in a war or some kind of emergency situation where this is temporarily necessary, don't do that.

The best alternative to selecting a leader and thinking & behaving the way they tell you is not to rely solely on your own judgement & assessment of everything. This is bad too. Instead have a number of thinkers you respect for good reason but who don't always agree w each other.

Then cherry-pick their ideas to your heart's content. "Cherry-picking" is often used as an accusation of inconsistency but, when done honestly & openly, it is just discernment.

I will take Jonathan Haidt's moral foundations but decline his views on atheism. I'll have Peter Tatchell's attitude to universal human rights but leave his views on feminism. I'll go with Maryam Namazie's views on Islamism but go elsewhere for thinking statistically.

I'm not kidding myself I'm achieving an unbiased view of the world with this tho. This whole process of selection and discernment is driven by my own values which change in the details but remain fairly consistent at the core. I think this is the best we can do as individuals tho

Oh, and btw, you can only possibly consider secularism/atheism/skepticism/whatever to be dominated by white men if you completely ignore the existence of ex-Muslims which accusers, sadly, tend to be inclined to do.

I’m still trying to process what I just read

-
On the plus side- That just motivated me to start writing. If that nonsense can get published...

-
Trav is a good person but I think their approach very misguided here. Send writing to me, please! helen.pluckrose@areomagazine.com

Noted. I’m a bit more impatient with these ideas. Oh wow. Thank you. I’ll save that. I’m going to start on Medium first & write about South Africa. I’ve been meaning to write about it for a while

-
I'm very very impatient with these ideas, but I have a soft spot for Trav because they do try to be charitable and honest and avoid triballism. You know when you like someone even tho you think they're going about things entirely the wrong way?
-
I think this can be applied to many people, including myself. Yes, I understand
Thank you

I was at the American Atheists Convention this weekend. There was nothing but goodwill and cooperation as well as many specialty atheist groups represented. Everyone agreed it takes all voices in the community. The only celebrity was Hugh Laurie. No idols. Everyone just mingling.

There was also lots of talk about activism through voting, promoting positive legislation, rescuing those trapped in countries where they are threatened with the death penalty, disseminating info to people in countries where they are starved for support of their non-belief.

And at the end, the group packe 30,000 meals for the Oklahoma City Foodbank, their largest service project at a convention so far. Also, talked about not pitting atheists against each other--simply destructive and a driving people away.
