I dunno, seems like far-right views are gaining popularity. At least here in the States.

'Have substance' = have sophisticated arguments, depth, something that can be intellectually engaged with. We know they have popularity but this is not based on its intellectual depth. There's not much to engage with after you've tried to explain why caring abt others is good
-
You and I could discuss at length, calling on many scholarly sources & much intellectual history, whether the better way to achieve equality is rooted in foregrounding identity & discourses of power or universalism and emptying identity categories of social significance.
-
That isn't there on the far-right. There's nothing of substance to engage with if we are immovable on whether women, PoC & the LGBT deserve equal rights, freedoms & opportunities. Best we can do is try to understand the psychology & move people on the fringes back.
-
Which reminds me, I assume you're probably not a big Amanda Marcotte fan, but she did write an interesting article about how to combat far-right college speakers' ideas without fitting the Regressive Left stereotype:https://www.salon.com/2018/03/12/progressives-can-win-the-free-speech-debate-but-not-by-fighting-on-the-rights-turf/ …

OK, bit concerned by this definition of Christina Hoff Sommers tho. Dismissing her as a troll suggests it unlikely her views are going to be considered seriously.

I doubt whether or not they have substance being the point. But then again the problem is that the far-right dialogue seeps into liberal/conservative dialogue especially with people like Douglas Murray. Questions must be asked such as: "What anti migrant views go too far?"
-
What did you mean was harmful then? We were saying it's quick and easy to condemn the far-right because there's no substance to it. It's straightforward to say 'racism, sexism, homophobia is wrong because people have rights and dignity. Now what?
-
It's just more complicated than that tho. What constitutes racism and sexism can be broad or narrow, obvious or insidiously obscure. Anti Islam views can be in good faith or radically bigoted and sometimes it's hard for people to tell the difference.
-
Yes, I know. How does this relate to what we were talking about tho? What far-right ideas do you think have substance that can be engaged with on its own terms?
-
I don't think any of them have substance. It's just if you think such ideas remain in groups such as the Charlottesville protesters.
-
So you agree with us and don't think it's harmful to say the ideas have substance. No-one has given you any reason to think ideas remain in groups such as the Charlottesville protesters. This is a complete non-sequitur.

Odd. As a libertarian I find it blindingly obvious why "lefties" AND "righties" are wrong. AND why they are right. AND when. AND for what reasons.
