Doesn’t that depend on whether the ideas at issue are clear, distinct and sufficiently explicated? Take justice and mercy, those ideas are squishy, and exist in tension with one another. To hold both in one’s mind would not be incoherent, but appropriate.

They're not opposing tho. They are things to be balanced. An opposing view would be to hold the idea that justice is best served by an eye for an eye and that it isn't.

True, my point was that were not talking Frege here. Black can’t be white at the same time. And a person solely committed to justice would be a monster, but a person interested only in mercy would be an idiot.
