If you mean by this that everyone has faith because they believe things they have not personally verified as true, I think this misses the point of faith which is a commitment to a position without evidence. Something meaningful & deeply held. 1/2https://twitter.com/gm_palmer/status/979332075781271552 …

There's too much evidence for anyone to have all of it and certainly too much for anyone to have *personally discovered* all of it.

I believe the Earth orbits the sun despite not actually knowing how this was determined or looking at the evidence. This is not an article of faith coz it comes under the umbrella of provisionally accepting scientific consensus while knowing much will be disproved. @gm_palmer

I do not have faith that the Earth orbits the sun. I don't care much whether it does or doesn't & am willing to stop believing so if evidence requires it. I recognise that this is a consensus of scientists who study this stuff & that they tend to be more right than everyone else

Why can't the same be said for religious faith? Am confused by the distinction?

The religious have faith that myths and legends and fairy stories are true. That is merely to be pitied by the rational among us.

It was not that long ago that Pluto was a planet. There was no legit answer to how the universe came to being, and Dinosaurs' relationship to birds were still in doubt. By the time I die who knows what will be said. We all have faith, just degrees of flexibility within it.

When science finds a better answer, supported by more or better evidence, it can move on. Religion can not, and does not. One is evidence based, the other is faith in made up shit. Its not complicated.

Not when it is reduced to such simplistic terms. But this all stemmed from a discussion about morality & ethics, which I came in 1/2 way-time zones and all, which is certainly more complicated. Trying to discern ought from is, to pass axioms to offspring or the larger community.

You are seeing simplicity when there isn't any. Ethics and Morality is not simplistic regardless of the foundations in which it is formulated.

Ethics and morality have -no- basis in the supernatural, except that s good person may readily be compelled to do evil things by belief in God. As there is no God, the presence in these fairytales is merely incidental.

Yeah, and even people who know exactly why that scientific understanding is accurate appeal to scientists in other fields for their beliefs about many other scientific propositions. It's reasonable to do so with a certain degree of certainty bc of the mechanisms in science.
