I don't think the charge is of "hypocrisy" per se, except for those professed atheists who really do go about their personal causes or objects of obsession with patently religious fervor. I'd view it more of an indictment of human nature to say that we tend to worship.

I'm talking about people who say it is hypocrisy and not people who note we have a tendency to get passionate about things.

Morals need transcendence. Think and act greater than oneself. The problem is the to convey the moral upon generations. If every generation has to reinvent, not just variables, the moral structure, it can be very problematic. As the Decalogue warned, self worship is natural.
