I have a zero tolerance policy for semantic pedantry. It is almost never in good faith & is very common among those who wish to avoid discussing the substance of the issue at hand. Clarify terms, certainly so productive conversation can happen. Pick at words endlessly? Bore off.

Semantic pedantry isn’t the example you gave. We clarify terminology using semantics, where we investigate the meanings of our terms and what that entails bears out in the truth of our claims. Our words are relevant to veracity. Source: scientific semantics is my field.

What is the correct term for being pedantic about definitions?

Calling it pedantic means basically that it's too much like a teacher, and that the person who is calling it that doesn't like it.

Huh? I know what pedantic means. Are you saying it's impossible to be pedantic about the meaning of words or are you saying that semantics is not about the meaning of words?

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply you don't know the meaning. I was trying to relate the logical import of the claim in an argument (that's why I wrote it out with the two separate clauses)

I don't know what you are saying. Are you saying that it's impossible to be pedantic about semantics?
