I like to think that I am not tribal because I can find common ground with anyone who shares the basic principles that underlie my humanism and liberalism & most people do, left & right, religious & non-religious, even if they don't use those terms for it.

But, really this kind of means I am tribal because I am bitterly opposed to people who reject those very broad principles of kindness, of valuing shared humanity and individual freedom. The malicious. Those who dehumanise segments of the population. The authoritarians.

I consider those people tribalists because their motivation really is based on a kind of ideological purity and punishing people who dissent from it. They consider this intolerable. But I consider them intolerable. So perhaps escaping tribalism simply isn't possible.

I see difference as universal vs local. Tribalists are less concerned with distant peoples, and more concerned with local compliance. It's the difference between a universal concept of human rights and the bylaws of a gated community.

I think escaping tribalism is almost impossible to avoid in much the same way as bias; the best we can do is to be aware of its influence and try to keep it in mind when our initial reaction to something conveniently aligns with our tribal instincts.

Well, it doesn't matter that much: you're in a "group," and it happens to be the right group. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

That's a really interesting point, but the intolerant don't club together under the banner of their intolerance, so your original point stands. We are all intolerant of certain behaviour, which isn't the same as being intolerant of certain ideas or opinions. You worded it well.

90% of the people we serve don't believe as we do or share our customs but that's great because we are not ideologically possessed. In my case I believe God is the final judge not us & he doesn't need us acting like deities.

Life would be unbearable without a tribe but life would disgusting to me if I belonged to a "warring tribe." "Blessed are the Meek." Meek = "One can use a sword but knows how to keep it sheathed."

Shared beliefs and tribal love is great it's when people become demonically possessed by and ideology and glom together that's just intolerable. I love my "fellowship" we organize to invest about 350K annually into our community.

My thoughts exactly. Especially those who push for purity in their ideology. You see them turn on those who “cross lines” when all they had done has agreed with a logical argument presented by another person, who the puritans dislike.

Nope. It's very human to form tribes of like-minded people. Everything else is a shaky (if often necessary) compromise.
