Semantic pedantry isn’t the example you gave. We clarify terminology using semantics, where we investigate the meanings of our terms and what that entails bears out in the truth of our claims. Our words are relevant to veracity. Source: scientific semantics is my field.

What is the correct term for being pedantic about definitions?
-
Calling it pedantic means basically that it's too much like a teacher, and that the person who is calling it that doesn't like it.
-
Huh? I know what pedantic means. Are you saying it's impossible to be pedantic about the meaning of words or are you saying that semantics is not about the meaning of words?
-
Sorry, I didn't mean to imply you don't know the meaning. I was trying to relate the logical import of the claim in an argument (that's why I wrote it out with the two separate clauses)
-
I don't know what you are saying. Are you saying that it's impossible to be pedantic about semantics?

Can you give an example?
-
What exactly do you mean by 'you?' Is this the second person singular or plural? Or are you really asking whether 'one' can ever truly convey information accurately to another person because of the subjectivity of interpretation and the fluidity of language?

I have a great deal of tolerance for semantic pedantry, so long as it /is/ in good faith. Semantics is the study of meaning, and pedantry just means caring about getting stuff right. I think we *should* care about getting meanings right.
-
Language is first and foremost about communicating something. If you understood what I meant, then there is no need to care about semantics.

Language is first and foremost about communicating something. If you don't care about semantics, it is unlikely that I will understand what you meant.
-
If you manage to misunderstand things because of small spelling mistakes, grammatical errors or missing punctuation, then the problem lies in your comperhension skills.

I haven't seen someone use "bore off" in ages and it made me happy!
