Also hate speech laws breach normal UK common law standard of measurable harm, and of reasonable reading. Very Napoleonic kind of law. (To address the contrast to the US)

2) People are allowed to hate. I have read articles and tweets by the activist in which their goal is to "stomp out hate" or "make society a safe space for all"...so "ending hate" for idealistic it sounds may be their objective; like che guevaras "doing the impossible"

The Canadian laws are pretty interesting, would like to know more. I wouldn't want a hate crime law that banned The Bell Curve, but if it banned the Guns N Roses song "One in a Million", maybe a plausible case they are a good ideas.

And he was charged and convicted under the Communications Act, which is where the "grossly offensive" part comes in, and why intent and impact on viewers was irrelevant. IANAL, but AFAIK actual hate speech in the UK must incite racial hatred. Either way, it's pretty ridiculous.
