The thing about hate speech is that it's inherently subjective and ripe for abuse, that's why I've always said that free speech specifically exists to protect the speech we "don't" agree with. Nobody threatens the speech they agree with.

The left in 1920 "free speech as a "bourgeois superstition"...it's coming around again.

I've always been torn with this argument. Where does the line between offensive speech and incitement lie, should it lie anywhere? Is there no difference between abusive language and calls to harm. Does it all come under free speech. Should the law never be involved. 1/2

Great summary of why free speech is the sine qua non of generating, testing and adopting good ideas.

Nice opening and clean segue to the middle but in the end it was just an advert for the interwebs. :-)

I think most UK folk support common-sense free-expression rules. The religious accept it's the main basis for preaching, The irreligious accept it's the main basis for speaking & criticising the religious. Just takes some time for enough folk to see there's a problem.

Ideologies aside, I'm inclined to believe the current issues are being exacerbated by social media - it straddles the categories of "personal expression" & "formal media outlet". This is causing a period of confusion (both legal, and in the way folk reason about it). It will pass

The only solution is to model responsible social media use (to show it can be done (you're v. good at doing this btw)) and try to advocate for a sensible legal understanding of social media (tho I know nothing about that, and I'm not sure how near that is).
