It's not American either. According to some grammar guides, it's a disused variant and the single-S version is strongly preferred. I think it was just a typo.

Double "s" is Oxford, not American. I once had an American editor yell at me for misspelling this when quoting a press release. Felt good to put him in his place. Go to hell, Keith, you failed comic novelist.
