She's said since she was 8 'I am a girl but I'm not girly' and this, I think, shows a clear understanding of the difference between gender identity (incredibly strongly correlated with sex) & gender expression. She also informed me she was heterosexual at 8.

Tbf, she has and still has a child in her class who has rejected the idea that he is a girl coz vagina since he was at least 4 and still does at 14 so probably always will. This could have prompted thoughts on gender identity that may not have otherwise occurred.

Self-imposed. They are suddenly discovering their sexuality and have to refigure their relationships with the opposite sex because new romantic ones are now potentially a thing.

I see some of this in primairy school as well. They prefer to not stick out. But my youngest is completely unimpressed by peer-pressure. (By any pressure tbf) But I think it's easier being a boyish girl, than a girlish boy.
-
So you’re saying that your youngest would live her life in exactly the same way and would be unaffected if every one of her peers became silent and hostile towards her?
-
Well, she's 5. So hostile right now come down to "I won't invite you to my party" or "I'll never play with you again". So far her answer has been: *shrug* "not doing it".
-
5, I get it.

I'm a secondary teacher. Primitive software around dominance and group belonging floods their fragile little processors at this time, whatever adults say about identity.

Inquisitive question: "You won't wear a skirt. It's because you're trans, isn't it?" Non-inquisitive question: "Is it because you just don't like skirts?"
