Religion as a psychological crutch could be less harmful than alcohol, yes. Perhaps think of it like methadone. Of course, it can be more harmful too. It was for me.https://twitter.com/Ruminorang/status/972869513413890050 …

One thing I’ve learned from going to A.A. meetings: Dispensing with the idea of God is a huge fucking problem for a lot of people, and reclaiming it actually offers salvation. I’m a lifetime atheist, but this observation is plainly true.

Religion provides a moral structure for those unwilling or incapable of providing their own. This includes a very substantial portion of the population. Those who can't accept faith carry a heavy burden. Who's better off?

Societies with less religion seem to be better off. It doesn't include a very substantial portion of my population.pic.twitter.com/dYnCTQQmv9

Meh. Not "belonging" to a particular religion does not mean "not religious." Being atheist, I would ask if one believed in some kind of god or higher power as opposed to not. Is being better off the cause or the effect? Just pondering.

It does largely mean that tho. I think more people believe than say so but it's not much of a thing here. We tend to get quite embarrassed if someone starts talking as tho a god exists. Very secular. Both I think. People get less religious when their needs are met in this life.pic.twitter.com/pGNR1RhNZY

Interesting to be atheist in US. Reaction to saying so in public is bit off-putting. Oddly, @jordanbpeterson provides great framework to BE atheist though he may not agree.
