I think there’s another side that your not appreciating. From his perspective, he sees smart people talking about his area of study and, he thinks, getting stuff wrong. As an educator it would be frustrating to say the least.

The frustration is clear. It comes from an assumption of being right. I dealt with it from theologians for years. You can't talk about God/faith unless you've devoted years of study to certain texts & understood them to be correct & a specific god therefore to exist.

I think that's a bit cynical lol. I imagine most academics dealing with someone who isn't in their field would feel the same way. That comes from trying to confront the Dunning-Kruger effect (at least that's how they'd see it), not necessarily from dogma.
