What does your instinct tell you? Should calories matter? Also, how do you define "expert."

Yes, I am going with counterintuitive right now because this keto thing seems to work. The authorities on the keto diet. Medical scientists mostly.
-
You will drop a lot of water on keto as carbs hold water. That said, you are likely also reducing your total calorie intake which is dependent to some degree on your drastic reduction in CHO. Note: I am in favor of low carbs as insulin is the most potent anti-lipolytic known.

It has also worked well to treat neurological conditions like mine. And it is helping that. Apparently, I just ate 1000 calories. My calorie controlled diet keeps me at 1500 a day. Breakfast is egg on toast at 350 calories.
-
Yes, empirical work last I checked generally (cumulatively) seemed to support its use in some neurological conditions (e.g., epilepsy). Off the cuff, have always hypothesized it has to do with brain glucose (sugar) as fuel feeding neurological phenotype.
-
Mine does include epilepsy but this is rare and not the disabling thing so if it only helps that and not the vision and co-ordination problems and pain, it will not be worth it.
-
I'm inclined to think even low carbs (say less than 75/day) will help your symptoms. One does not begin to realize how much the refined sugars and breads contribute to all kinds of crap.
-
Quite possibly. However, I committed to trying this keto diet as prescribed for at least a month so I will do that and see what the results are and then compare this to other methods.

Immersive journalist on Sam Harris podcast went through different diets for a year. He said it comes down to simple calories and exercise. Everything else is just a sales pitch. Simple carbs and sugar are a problem. Diet should be mostly plant-based.

Who are the experts saying that calories don't matter? Focusing on food quality/specific macros might just be an effective way to reduce calories without being aware of the deficit. Does anyone reputable actually say that calories don't matter?

I have a child with a growth disorder that took 3 years to diagnose. The only thing I learned for sure is that medical science knows sweet fuck all about how metabolism and growth work. Trust no one who makes an absolute claim.

Here's my two Eurocents: only start a diet which you could (theoretically) stick to for the rest of your life. All other endeavours lead to more weight EVENTUALLY!

I have seen countless people lose massive amounts of weight by cutting the carbs. Ultimately it’s calories in vs calories out, but carbs pack a ton of calories into each bite.

Is it a matter of whether or not they matter or of how they matter and in relationship to what else?

It's not so much quantity as it is quality. Certain types of calories are worse than others.

Try only meat for a while, you will be surprised at how well you feel.

You don't really have to worry about it on keto.

Counting calories is important, but the kind of calories is *more important*. So don't just stop counting calories, but avoid carbs and, above all, sugars. Fats, proteins and fiber should be almost exclusively what you eat, if you're looking to lose weight.

I’ve always struggled with my weight, though, and have never liked carbs much or had a sweet tooth.
