The attitude reminds me of Callicles contra Socrates in *Gorgias*: "Philosophy's all well and good when you're young, but anyone who continues to do it after that deserves a beating!"

I didn't think you were. I wasn't thinking of you at all. Instead, I had in mind someone else who uses a patina of philosophy to rationalize his prejudices, then, when anyone scratches that patina with critical arguments, responds not rationally but with ridicule.

They might just find the arguments ridiculous?

Well that's certainly true. But the question isn't whether they do (or do not) find the arguments ridiculous. The question is whether they should (or should not) do so.

I think she means they might just think the arguments are ridiculous, as opposed to thinking that adults who keep doing philosophy "deserve a beating."
