Glad to hear that it is also your experience that the vast majority of people are not reacting violently to these factual claims.
I remove myself from such conversations if a person keeps focusing on semantics after a maximum of three attempts of clarifying my meaning & asking that person to instead address what I mean rather than what they think I should call what I mean.

I did this after getting bogged down in what is the correct definition of 'atheist' and 'feminist' so many times and never getting to actually discuss arguments against the existence of God or how to go about achieving gender equality.
-
Cool. My goal is never to bog down, only to get clear on shared terminology before moving forward. Otherwise you just have to start over halfway through.
-
This is the problem tho. People never agree to share terminology. They just argue forever about whether an atheist is someone who lacks belief in God or holds a belief that God does not exist. Very very tedious. Much better to establish what they mean by a word & get to substance
-
I never called myself one until hearing the passive version. Seven on the Dawkins scale seems like too much certainty. We simply can’t know some things.

Most of us are a six, I think.

And I think you were conflating mere semantics and a key moral distinction. I saw James actually got the distinction when he claimed liberals are relativists masquerading as pluralists or something similar. Pluralism vs relativism matters a great deal. But I won’t waste your time
-
I'm sure it does and the distinction is important with grey areas and potentially very interesting. It just wasn't what I was talking about right then & I did not want the conversation derailed. I admit I did assume you were doing this deliberately to avoid what I was talking abt
-
But I'll accept that you were not if you say so. It doesn't matter much now anyway. The moment is gone & I managed to have the conversation about the issues I was addressing after muting you. Another time, we can talk about the things you want to talk about, certainly.

You two are being too reasonable REEEEEEEEEEEEEE
