Bit concerned by the number of people saying we shouldn't worry too much about acts of authoritarian aggression if they are small & no-one gets hurt & the targeted group or indnvidual continues to be able to express ideas when it's over.

It's just cowardice. Admitting there is a real problem and risking your reputation is no small feat. Being considered a racist/misogynist can take a real toll on someone's social/romantic and professional life.

Yeah. If someone throws a pork joint through a mosque or synagogue window during a meeting, the worshippers can sweep up the glass & get back to the meeting within a few minutes. Only a tiny fringe of far-right would say this is fine & people should respect the protest tho.

Authoritarian seems a strange characterisation of Antifa. The key question is imho are they disrupting something that tends towards fascism (or violence in general). If so, there is a justification.

That’s a rubbish argument. You claim these words are tending towards fascism - but that is more than tendentious. And then in reply to these words you visit actual violence on speakers at a meeting. It is the spuriously named ‘antifa’ who are the authoritarians here.

My concern is that those groups are being used to distract us from the bigger threats. My family has lived through this tactic before fleeing to the states. It's taught us to be mindful of the big picture where many of these dividing tactics are orchestrated. It's scary. 😒

The mantra of modern education has been, "Teach people how to think, not what to think." Maybe we should just go back to telling them what to think. JK! (maybe)

Yeah... that mantra's a fake front. College students are more and more getting the "what" and not the "how".

Agitators have been exploring what may or may not cross the line for the past 2-3 years. They use their knowledge of what bad behavior is tolerated to enact the most negative experience possible experience on their detractors, in hopes of silencing them while avoiding consequence

It's the small lies that lead to the big lies and that's how communism got started. I've read Solzhenitsyn. In the end killing the grasses is what ended Communism. Harsh but true.

What amazes me is how there never seems to be any consequences for these people. Why are students allowed to do these sort of things yet do not get expelled or punished? Universities are supposed to be about education not activist training camps

Agreed. A Twitter rewrite: Don't worry about acts of agression if they're only daily occurrences, blood loss is minimal and targets only suffer mild brain damage. #FreeSpeech

People are literally decrying we're in the age of unenlightenment. How do we not need to out things into perspective. People are literally crying free speech at disagreement. I think there is room to tone down rhetoric.

This is sort of like saying you shouldn't be worried if someone sneaks into your house and steals items of little value. It's the sneaking and stealing that should worry you, not the value. How long before something of import goes missing? And what of your sense of security?

The fact that if I go to see @CHSommers speak I must do so not being sure whether I'll be able to hear her speak, or if she'll be interrupted by masked vandals damaging property and trying to intimidate both her and her audience into silence. That's what bothers me.

The problem is that these authoritarian acts of aggression are only the manifestations of a deeper malaise. Colleges are becoming indoctrination centers, where disagreement is forbidden and free speech derided.
