I don't think the people who shouted over Christina Sommers valued the free speaking & hearing of diverse ideas. I think they hated her ideas & wanted to prevent them from being heard. I think this means they rejected the underlying point of the principle of freedom of speech.https://twitter.com/notCursedE/status/971305809647931392 …

So we agree this wasn't a free speech issue because she wasn't being arrested for her speech. It was just a "some people being rude" issue.

People are defending the validity of the tactic: "shout if you don't like of what someone is saying" as if it's not an attack on individual free speech INSIDE THE ACADEMIA! Unbelievable. (Sorry for the poor English, I'm Brazilian and just half learned the language).

It's great and much better than my Porteguese. Obrigada! <- that was it. (no 'the' before academia) Yes, it's alarming that this seems normal to people.

Here we still don't went "full PC", but I work and study in a public University (here this public service is designed to the rich, but unfortunately I'm not). Every trend born in USA the students copy immediately. Then they say it's a shame how "colonized" we still are. 😒

I doubt any of the people trying to prevent her from being heard have actually listened to her ideas. I'm not saying they wouldn't hate them, just that they don't need to actually know anything to label her an enemy & it's disturbing to me.

I don't think they even know her ideas. I think they read the headline of an email sent out by MediaMatters and decided to disrupt the event.
