I would call it preventing open discourse, not preventing free speech. Both are critical pillars of liberal society but I consider 'free speech' to be freedom from government intervention and open discourse to be freedom from idiot intervention. Approximately.

OK, I don't. Americans often do. I am referring to a much longer liberal tradition of encouraging the free exchange of ideas for the advance of society. What Rauch calls liberal science. Different countries have different laws around this & they change. Principle remains.pic.twitter.com/La1serXMLk

Yes, Americans view it differently because 1st Amendment specifically refers to government intervention. That's an important distinction. Protesting a speaker isn't violating their first amendment rights which is why I make the distinction.

The heckler's veto is an affront to free speech

The ideas should be listened to before the response is made. If Ms Sommers was invited to talk and answer questions, then the talk bit should come first. The right to protest does not include the right to close down a discussion before it starts. Better ways to protest than this!

Umberto Eco noted that one of the common features of fascism is the cult of action for action’s sake. “Action being beautiful in itself, it must be taken before, or without, any previous reflection. Thinking is a form of emasculation.” So no, "heckling" is not free speech.

It seems it was the sheeps in 'Animal Farm' who were the heroic defenders of freedom. We were reading the book all wrong. Preventing speech is free speech.
