I think it's better not to associate the words 'idiot' and 'moron' with the learning disabled. Even if they were once acceptable & even medical terms for them, they have not been so for a long time.https://twitter.com/IonaItalia/status/971285230177996801 …

I don’t use idiot or moron as slurs because, like most people I don’t use them abt or to refer to ppl with actual mental disabilities. However, I’m happy to seek alternatives.

I think I'd be offended if someone refrained from using the word 'moron' as an insult because they thought it properly described me.

Yep, same here. I reserve the word for unconvincables who are also wrong, a category of people I've determined tend to be lacking in logical training, It's fine to be firmly convinced if you've based that on the scientific method, lol.

So, if you could clarify for me, is it generally deemed offensive to be called "idiot" or "retarded" because the implication is that I'm mentally handicapped? Or that I'm mentally normal but I'm behaving like one who is mentally handicapped? Or is it only offensive if I'm...

... *actually* mentally handicapped? Like, I get that being called names is no fun, but I'm having trouble nailing down why exactly it's "offensive", who exactly it "offends", and in what exact circumstances.

There's a massive hashtag around the use of that world today, but maybe only in my part of the world? #nogoodway
