I think most people who offer opinions and make arguments on social media act as tho they are pretty confident about them. I'm not sure you'd be able to measure a difference in 'aura of expertise' between Dawkins and the plumber. https://twitter.com/alexsimonelis/status/971201731324506114 …

Many do act confident. But he brings more: real experise as a famous prof of biology. Others don't have that kind of oomph. Problem is his oomph isn't in the field of religion, but transferable in many people's minds, I suspect.

Most religions make truth claims related to the field of biology. His expertise allows him to shoot them down. Being as these faiths also generally claim to source such info from infallible sources, that’s all he needs to break the very bedrock of their ideology.

They do. My fear was that I or anyone I love could be tortured for all eternity for believing the wrong thing or not having enough faith. It was neuroscience showing that self is brain and can reasonably be expected to die with brain if not before that freed me from that.

1/ And that’s where your biology is wrong and gets ideological. The truth is that, so far, biology or any other science actually, is totally unable to understand what consciousness is. Your science is a science for robots. It would perfectly explain a robot’s functionning.

2/ And a robot can perfectly function without ever knowing what the color blue is, or the smell of a rose. You don’t « need » it. And you cannot provide that info to a robot because no one knows how to. Wavelength of light is just a figure, it contains absolutely no info on color

3/ Problem is: the only reality we, humans, know is via our perceptions. Ie the mere things science doesn’t get to explain. Of course, that simple, factual observation contradicts the scientist dogma most atheists cherish. Or at least it confronts it with a problem.

4/ And good news, atheists are human beings like all others. They don’t like it when reality contradicts their dogmas :)
