@HPluckrose This kind of thing. It stems from the Jordan Peterson crowd but in the past few days, I've seen it begin to get louder and from people who not consider to be part of that JP crowd.

Especially given that in the United States, the Conservatives have control of literally every branch of government so giving people leeway to assemble (also guaranteed by the 1st amendment) is probably more important than ever if we want to "listen to diverse opinions."
-
Congress doesn't have all that much power when it comes to controlling the discourse. The President certainly does. The Left influences our discourses via Hollywood, TV, mainstream news, social media, and the Academy, whereas the Right has radio, Fox, and some social media play
-
Which is why I say that this crowd is beginning to sound a little like Alex Jones. They literally have all the power that one can desire in US government.
-
"All the power" doesn't hold because of the filibuster in the Senate. Actually, the fillibuster has gotten our legistlative institutions grinded to a halt... I might even be in favor of getting rid of it (The problem is the amount of instant power that'd give the Republicans)

Squashing assemblies and defunding college programs would be a bad look for lovers of the Enlightenment

I think we agree here. Using political power to defund people from expressing opinions and from studying what books they'd like to study seems to be the same sort of Pragmatism that the PoMos use when they deplatform someone.
