There is a tendency to conflate experience with knowledge and this underlies the idea that you can only know a thing about a group you are part of. James and I were asked why we didn't consult any trans people when writing about a liberal & science-based approach to trans issues

This would not have helped our endeavour. We can get liberal ethics & scientific info from liberals & scientists who may or may not also be trans. Being trans would not indicate that what any individual advocated was liberal or scientific.

Therefore, if you want a collection of experiences of being trans, and we often do want exactly that, you'd need to go to trans people. If you want to know the science of something, you need a scientist. If you want to consider liberal ethics, you need liberals.

A trans person who was conservative or anti-science would advocate against liberal positions and science. This would not become right because they were trans and speaking in the context of trans issues. I'll remain liberal & evidence-based.
