Blaming atheism may be wrong, but the shockingly high capacity for murder of self-consciously atheistic regimes gives the lie to the claim that mass murder is caused by religion.

Not theism inherently, but blaming certain types of theism seems appropriate. (e.g. "God is only good, God requires this harm, therefore doing this harm is good / not doing this harm is bad")
