Thinking about fear of violence & gender. I've found recently since receiving some plausible threats of violence & having to talk to people about it, that I, as a disabled woman, am often expected to be more fearful of it than able-bodied men coz less able to defend myself.

I think I'm less fearful of it simply because there is less I can do about it. I'd try, obviously. I have a stick. But I don't have a lot of strength & less co-ordination & I can't run away very well. I can run a bit sometimes on a good day when well warmed up but mostly, no.

Because there is little I can do, I see the risk of violence as much like the risk of a car accident. I'll be sensible but then continue doing what I want to do and take the risk and not spend a lot of time worrying about 'what ifs.' This is liberating in a way.

I think it is able-bodied men who worry more about potential violence simply because there is some point to this. Remaining alert to credible threats and planning & preparing for what you'd do in the moment realistically is likely to have an impact on the outcome.

You *should* also have the belief that you will be defended against such an attack by everyone able-bodied around you- able-bodied men know not to expect that.

I know that I would but this induces more guilt than reassurance. But yes, able-bodied men also have to worry way more how they would acquit themselves and fear failing their friends & families & damaging their reputations if it's badly.

I wish there was a mens-issues awareness-raising approach that didn't ape feminist guilt-tripping. It would serve the MRM agenda better, I suspect.
