FFS. The child writes fantasy fiction and she actually does very well at this. Now she's worrying that she's getting called racist because she doesn't say what skin colour any of her characters have and, apparently, this means they are all white.

That’s such a shame; hope she is not derailed from writing.

At the moment she just thinks they are ludicrous.

Good for her. Most often it’s just a lazy reach for profundity, to raise such criticisms of creative writing, IMHO.

Is she worrying or is she actually being called "racist"?

Both. She's not hugely worried but she says that she's explained she doesn't give her characters a skin colour and it's not relevant to the plot coz they usually have super powers and often aren't even human.

Actually, forget it, because it doesn't matter either way. You can't win with these people. Write in ethnic minorities? They'll torch you for cultural appropriation and writing what you don't know. I say, to hell with 'em.

Good. I'm seeing more and more young people point and laugh at these whiners . The problem is, these people create political groups or join the NUS and exact their whims over the others.

If these kids automatically think white when reading a story that doesnt indicate the characters' races, & they are uncomfortable with that for whatever reason, that is something they have to confront with themselves. This says more about them than it does about your daughter.

I've noticed that about certain complaints about the "lack of gay characters" in a show or movie. Like, if their sexuality is never mentioned, why are you assuming their straight? Surely that's on you?

Conclusion: the people who are calling her a racist are the ones who are making stereotypical assumptions about race. They, then, are the racists here. Does the child do critical thinking? (One would certainly hope so.) If so, then maybe walk her through the analysis?

tell her to block or ignore anyone who says that - or to do what one of my friends did; every abusive whine about that topic resulted in another character explicitly becoming white.

I’d never teach my child to purposefully swear and use profanities. However I will teach her if anyone ever says anything like this to her she has my permission to turn round and say ‘Fuck off’.

Not having minority characters is racism. Having minority characters is problematic since how can a white person understand a minority. Can't win Helen. Just make sure she writes well.
