    Helen Pluckrose Retweeted Joseph Clark

Did Pinker really say we shouldn't critically examine the claim that centuries of racism and sexism seem to have imprinted themselves into our institutions on a structural level? Seems very unlikely.https://twitter.com/clarkjosephf/status/967864924809637895 …

    Helen Pluckrose added,

    Joseph Clark @clarkjosephf
PINKER: We can follow the example of the Enlightenment by critically examining our assumptions and norms. IDENTITY POLITICS: Great. Centuries of racism and sexism seem to have imprinted themselves into our institutions on a structural level. PINKER: no not like that

The enlightenment attitude should be to look hard at issues, but then decide based on reason, not emotion. At least speaking for myself, if there is evidence of structural inequalities - and evidence of interventions that can help - then I am all about it. Modern way to be

As far as identity politics and social justice issues go, if we have numbers that show that African Americans are more likely to be shot or arrested by cops, plus empirical evidence (videos) then would this count as a "modern" analysis to you?

So definitely not all social justice issues can be categorized as "irrationally postmodern?" We agree on that.

Well, yes. There is no good reason to address social justice issues from an irrational postmodern perspective. Do it properly. Use liberal ethics against human rights abuses consistently.

In fact, Helen, I've read a few of your articles now, and I'd be interested to get your take and read an article from you on Traditionalism and Western Esotericism, the kind of stuff that Jordan Peterson seems to have an affinity for. Just an idea.

Doesn't matter if he said it. It only matters if someone claims he said it. Critical examination not necessary. Welcome to the endarkenment.

My issue with identity politics is that its devotees often seem to be the ones unwilling to examine things at a structural level

He has explicitly acknowledged such crimes and pointed out that they are not that uncommon in the long history of our species and that the ascent of liberal values coincides with a decline in such behaviour.

This fake quote shit is so lazy. It's a complete fabrication of a position the "speaker" allegedly holds, with none of the burden of substantiating the accusation, or even intellectually engaging with the speaker's actual words or arguments.
