I really must write a thing about what I mean by 'liberal' because conceptions of it vary so greatly especially across the Atlantic.

You are not cool if you think current system is the most evil or dysfunctional in history
-
Both of them make this claim in different ways. I think it's the best we've ever had but could improve.
-
Just think that lot of people believe racism and discrimination are getting worse! They had no idea how awful the past was for women, minorities and others.
-
I also think this is true. And without saying they had it worse than women and minorities in the past, I also think there is a huge misunderstanding of what life was like for working-class men 70-odd years ago.

First, define your terms So much is dependent on that.
-
That was my point. People mean different things by the terms so I think I need to write a thing about what I mean.
-
It is so unreasonable to expect people to define their terms before expounding their positions. I hate it. I say, look it up in the f--g dictionary. I'm sympathetic.

As
@PeterBoghossian said at the PSU talk, radicals overload the established definitions of words rather than invent new ones. This undermines civil discourse by framing the narrative in such a way that every topic becomes a minefield.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

I know that you want to have all people who make tea in microwaves sent to special camps for re-education. Which is morally proper and correct.

Taking inspiration from David Pakman's discussion of "liberalism", I consider myself an evolved liberal. I am interested in maximizing opportunity for individuals and encouraging human flourishing. I think the state can & has played a role in increasing freedom for most ppl.

I don't subscribe to any of these popular labels any more than I do to any particular ideology, because, like
#ProbabilityTheory, as soon as you pin the beast down, it seems to change its very nature. And there's no popular philosophy/ideology that's all right, or all wrong. -
In any case, different people's opinions of where you stand politically/philosophically generally tell us more about them than you.

I think a part of the diffficulty is that we all want to set the ethos or standards. What one of us wants to give that kind of authority to another group? Does that make sense?
