I am also a progressive but that has negative connotations now too. I don't want a revolution or radical change. I want to keep refining a system which has thus far brought us strong institutions and more equal opportunities and human rights. This annoys everyone.

Those considerably to the left of me accuse me of wanting to maintain the status quo which (bizarrely) they see as conservative. Those significantly to the right of me accuse me of wanting to further fuck up a system which has been going wrong for some time.

Right, it used to mean, “Anyone who is on the left side of the spectrum.” Now it means “borderline libertarian” for some reason.

Other way here. The left didn't own liberalism. It was about freedom & equal opportunities generally. You couldn't be an extremist authoritarian of any kind.

(don't forget that in Australia "Liberal" means "Tory", and "liberal" means like your version. Yes, the capitalisation matters.

Oh, yeah! It took me a while to understand what Americans meant by "liberal", "conservative" and lots of other expressions that, in Economy, have the opposite meaning. And in other sciences. They use it in completely different context.

Dear Helen - I hope you don't mind if I attach a piece I wrote about the meaning of the word 'liberal' on my blog: https://brandonrobshaw.wordpress.com/2013/07/29/what-is-a-liberal/ … You probably don't have time to read it but it's there if you do.

That's more or less what Americans mean by "conservative", minus the religious aspects. (If course, America is, historically, far more classically liberal than England.)

Stick to the terms in relationship to “modernism” those seem to be clear as of yet. (Ie anyone knowledgeable understands the distinction immediately, and anyone ignorant isn’t immediately assuming something incorrect)
