IMHO the difference between left and right is the relationship they try to create with the past. This is why the radical left is always insisting that it is in a state of "revolution" while the radical right eschews anything new, particularly lifestyles.

The left paints a lack of social change as the great societal ill. While the right paints all change as the beginning of a slippery slope to degeneracy. On this spectrum I consider myself to be slightly left of center, but within American politics I'm decidedly right-leaning.

For more evidence of this, just consider their campaign slogans. Obama ran on the inanely nonspecific platform of "Change" (any change will do!), while Trump wants to "Make America Great Again" - implying a bygone golden age in our past that we should try to recover.
