I love cross-stitch. I am more than happy for men to love cross-stitch. I recommend it. It is fun and relaxing. But when it comes to doing feminist icon cross-stitch for the explicitly political purpose of exploring your masculinity, you need to get a grip.

This just ruins cross-stitch for me. Now I have to think about whether I'm performing my gender and perpetuating gender roles even tho I know it's just something creative that even profoundly unartistic people can do.

I'm being facetious, btw. I don't actually care if he wants to politicise needlework and support his right to write silly things about it.

I'm not doing blocky feminist icons, tho. I'm probably othering & objectifying women and promoting the monstrous feminine with my 'Siren of the Storm.' I don't care. It's striking and dramatic and will look good on my conservatory wall.pic.twitter.com/2rYZQQm4Hi

Masculinity, or stitchery? Or online confessionality? (Btw Hellen we met at PSU after the talk; I’m the guy with the forgettable characteristics who shook your hand)

I remember! You said you were here but that we'd only spoken a couple of times. :) Cross stitch. He is bad at cross stitch.

So like woodworking, metal working, working on cars or bikes, tinkering with electronics, etc? All those mostly male crafting activities? It's like he never actually met men other than his urbanites friends.pic.twitter.com/D98jKUrK7r

He should just cut tot he chase and make a blocky and not very good cross stitch of a virtue signal.

I doubt any guy really interested in cross stitching would refrain simply because it’s “not for men”. Most guys don’t paint either and it’s not because painting is or isn’t for men.

I would try cross stitch, but it would consume my existence. I once spent 4 hours colouring in a sheet of graph paper.
