My general issue is with concepts. Nobody can tells me what loves is beyond the chemical changes it makes in the brain. In other words: if the person is not under a fMRI Machine I will never know what for that person love means. Pessimistic?

Even a brainscan shows very little, as people's scans differ enough with each other, that you can't say much about an individual's inner-state. You can only speak about statistical patterns usually.

http://www.iflscience.com/brain/brain-scans-reveal-activity-associated-romantic-love/ … One of the study's limitations: "Furthermore, it is reliant on the students’ classification of being in love, which is subjective". Basically, it's a circular problem. People tell you they are in love, you then brainscan them. But what does that show?

Exactly. I totally agree. Indeed I do not think really that love can be used in Research in this way for the reason you point out. Yet for instance sexual attraction, excitement, reaction, pheromones reactivity are measurable. We should leave love to poetry!

True re poets. Great poets managed to come close to explaining it, but even then it's like we have to experience it. Also love versus lust? Companionship vs sexual bond? I think there's so many things going on. Like you said, I'll leave it to the poets :)

Really interesting what you say about the measurements. Anyway, I'm totally getting side-tracked... apologies... I only did so because you made me think about love in detail... which is fascinating. Thanks.
