Fun but vaguely disconcerting discovery of the day: @BretWeinstein does a better received British accent than I do.

Ha! Elements of the former but also, I am ashamed to admit, Essex.

I'm gonna be pedantic here and claim there is no "British" accent any more than there is an "American" accent. Folks may be thinking of the standard accent of the "upper" class taught in the boarding schools. That kind of "defines" upper class.

That's called 'received' or 'BBC English.' Not quite upper class but upper middle class. eg Hitchens not Prince Charles.

They sound exactly the same to me. What would be a difference?

Getting your vowels right. Received is about clarity, neutrality. Upper class is an accent - distorted. Received - I, dog, -ing, UC - aye, dawg, -in'

Sounds like the upper class is from Oklahoma lol still don't understand but I trust your ear to hear the difference.

I'll reserve judgement on that until I've heard attempts from you both, preferably in the same clip. Have you a sample snippet of audio?

I put it down to biology. Received British in a male timbre is far more attractive to female hominins than female is to male. He also has a beard and hat.
