I'm going to be very unpatriotic and say that Portlanders are kinder than Londoners. I got horribly lost on my walk and had to ask directions several times to get back to where I am staying. People were very warm and went out of their way to help me.

One woman took the time to explain how numbered streets work and what a block is and then she walked me part of the way and then she patted me on the back, welcomed me to America and gave me a chocolate-covered strawberry. So sweet.

My wife had a similar experience recently in London and told me how polite Londoners are. I think the key is to get lost.

Do you also have noticeable accent? I feel sometimes that can go a certain way as well as some people realize their actions then become representative of their country and want to “show a good side”
