I'm going to be very unpatriotic and say that Portlanders are kinder than Londoners. I got horribly lost on my walk and had to ask directions several times to get back to where I am staying. People were very warm and went out of their way to help me.

My wife had a similar experience recently in London and told me how polite Londoners are. I think the key is to get lost.
-
Yes, maybe. A kind of benign superiority. People like to be able to help.
-
Do you also have noticeable accent? I feel sometimes that can go a certain way as well as some people realize their actions then become representative of their country and want to “show a good side”
-
Well, yes. No one's gonna think I am American.

Do you not have blocks in Britain ?
-
It's a much looser term. We will say 'It's just round the block' to mean 'It's within a few streets.'

You got lost in a city with a numbered grid system?

-
Well, NOW I understand numbered grid systems...

I guess Americans are probably some of the friendliest people on earth. That's why I am going to choose Britain every time! I am anti-social like that, I won't know how the handle all those friendliness. Feel right at home in London

-
(No, seriously, I think London has exactly the right amount of "friendliness" for me. If I ask, people are quite polite and would be willing to help. But they are not going to walk me to my station and they aren't stopping to ask if I need help, phew)

Yes hipsters are generally very nice people. Everyone who lives in Portland voluntarily is a hipster. Hipster etiquette tip: in hipster culture it's very rude to criticize a hipster's taste in music because then they are socially obligated to pretend they never liked it anyways.

Yeah, but avoid the creepy guy in the black van who says “would you like to go for a ride? I ‘ll give you a piece of candy. “ He may also ask you to help him look for his lost puppy.

I don't know of your opinion of Hitch, but he went into detail several times about the genuine kindness of Americans and how it was different than in the UK. Seems you are having some of the same experience.

Not arguing about Portlanders, but London’s bigger and as cities get bigger the inhabitants tend to become less kind.
