One woman took the time to explain how numbered streets work and what a block is and then she walked me part of the way and then she patted me on the back, welcomed me to America and gave me a chocolate-covered strawberry. So sweet.

Though I must say I had very nice encounters in London 2, 1 gentleman carried my suitcase downstairs at the underground, 1 helped me up after a bad fall & 1 saved me from being run over because I looked in the wrong direction crossing the street

I'm from West Virginia (central Appalachia) and when I visited Portland a few years ago I was similarly struck by this overwhelming presence of goodwill. I've been to a lot of American cities, and I think it's an outlier. Happy travels!
