This is different. Yes, having a child was the most important thing I ever did. No, this does not mean I am completely fulfilled by being with her. The VAST MAJORITY OF PEOPLE need their individual purpose in life too & this is healthy & good because kids grow up & move out.https://twitter.com/WolfHornet/status/963400906195730433 …

Having kids is not the "one and only act," it's just one of the most important ones that gives life meaning. Again, for the VAST MAJORITY OF PEOPLE toiling away at a job doesn't rank close. I mean for most normal people. Apparently not the weirdos on this thread.

If you really are one of those rare people who finds fulfilment in working with children, you can always work with them when your kids grow up but most people don't find this the most rewarding thing ever but still have children & are glad they did. Parents are people too.

My father was a successful businessman & neutral on having kids. He quite liked me once I arrived tho. My mother, a writer, student, secretary & stand-up comedian. She always wanted kids but also found them tiresome to be around for too long. This is normal & healthy. I was loved

I know I've said this before but I really think it's important not to burden kids with being your sole purpose in life. That's a huge responsibility. I think kids do best when they know they are important and loved but also know that their parents are people with their own lives.

You're assuming the "vast majority" would not view kids as their purpose in life. Maybe true. But probably not true that a vast majority would not view kids as a purpose in life.

You're so right. I'm so sorry for the kids whose mother consider themselves complete by motherhood and then project everything on their children. Because since they don't have a life, they force their kids to live what should have been her life...

This is often overlooked I feel. But as a parent you are obligated to live up to your own potential. Otherwise how can you advise your kids to do the same? They will see through it. You cannot give up on your dreams just because you have kids. It's irresponsible.

You don't need to drop off your kids with strangers and go off to make somebody else money for fulfillment. My mother was a homemaker, and volunteer, was very active in the community and was well read. She was 5x the person of anyone I ever met with a high powered career.

Hard to compare in terms of "fulfilment"... until you're asked which of the two you'd prefer not to lose.
