Do you feel we pay too much here in the UK? Legally we are allowed to take 52 weeks off work. Pay wise we get 90% of full pay for first 6 weeks and then statutory government pay of £140 a week for up to 39 weeks.
-
We do? I just got 12 weeks pay. I think holding people's jobs for them is good and I think that a means-tested increase of benefits for mothers of babies also seems reasonable.
-
I don't know enough about how the economy works but I'm just not sure 'because I want to be with my baby 24/7' is a good enough reason to be paid not to work once recovered from birth.
-
I think that becomes a lifestyle choice then and must be worked out and planned for by a couple. My adult daughter is currently working a job she dislikes to save up money to have a baby and take a year off.
-
We need to value families above and beyond economics/capitalism.
-
I don't know that that means anything. I do value my family over economics and capitalism but I also value other people's wellbeing and I'm not prepared to take money which could be spent on vulnerable people for looking after my own house and family.
-
Most people having kids are vulnerable. Everyone should be able to take care of their own children for up to a year. biologically/psychologically/sociologically speaking: we need to. Forming secure bonds takes longer than a few weeks. Breastfeeding is crucial and takes time, too.
-
I think we're just going to keep going over the same area so I'll leave it here.

But elderly people are our parents and grandparents, so why aren’t we taking care of them instead? They’re our responsibility too, are they not?
-
Not in the same way. We didn't decide to have parents and grandparents.

Aging is an even more predictable expense than raising a child. If parents are expected to take full financial responsibility for this cost, then why are the elderly any less liable?

So government should surely not pay to care for them either since they’re our family and our responsibility?
