We've actually got a good thing going here, you know? This secular, liberal democracy, equal opportunities, human rights, scientific advances thing? It's not perfect & recent events are alarming. Polarisation is growing & easy to get apocalyptic. Don't. Calm down. Think. Fix it.

Terrible straw man there, unlike your usual high standards of argumentation

You haven't met people who say we're completely succumbing to white supremacy/patriarchy/heteronormativity or alternatively to far-left SocJus values & that we need to drastically re-order society? No Anarcho-communists, intersectional existremists, ethno-nationalists, alt-right?

Follow me a bit longer. I retweet them regularly.

I question whether there are really that many people who don’t want to fix things, apart from cynical manipulators whose power derives from discord and polarisation. Most people want to fix things, but can’t agree on how to do so, worsened by a societal collapse in trust.

I finally got around to reading this and it was very good. I might quibble with a few points, but you’d probably be disappointed if your readers didn’t, and I thought it was good enough to sign up on Patreon. Looking forward to reading more of your work.

Yay! Thank you!

My pleasure. I’m always on the lookout for good long-form articles, which sadly seem to be a dying breed in these days of 24/7 hot takes and clickbait.

Alot of people don't even argue that everything is awful. They just say it is, and go from there.

I read the thread this starts, noted the “no one wants to fix it” argument, you pointed to an article suggest a fix (maybe several!) and “...I don’t have time to read that”. Egad.

Different topic, but I commented on the same attitude earlier. Relentless negativity and stuck in the status quo. It's boring.

Remains to be seen who is right.

It’s easier to destroy than to create. The real question is whether people have the courage to stay on the difficult path.

Feels similar, to me, to how drug companies often seem to wanna just "treat" symptoms forever. If the Everything-Is-Awfuls actually start solving problems, that could leave them w/ none to "fight."

http://nationalpost.com/wcm/b6246a57-932a-42d8-92b5-d25a5956ce2d … "The traditional liberal response of public censure and rebuttal is no longer effective because it just “devolves into a pissing match that goes nowhere and only makes people double down on their opinions,” he said...."

yeah, but also bad are the people who cling to the status quo long after the jig is up. We need to know when to embrace change.
