We need to make this embarrassing at the same time as making it as unembarrassing as possible to acknowledge an error of reasoning. In fact, the latter should be held in the highest esteem because everyone does it. To err is human. To acknowledge it is to be the best of humans.

To bastardise Coleridge on those who put faith ahead of truth: 'Those who begin by prioritising justice over reason, will proceed by putting their own politics ahead of justice, and end in placing themselves before everyone else.' It's not stupidity, it's selfishness/arrogance.
